Make long distance great again

If I was the GOD of Orienteering, I would make two  changes in regard of the long distance at WOC. These just to make the long distance the epic it deserves to be. Runners for the podium shall be allowed to show their best performance uninfluenced by other runners. Pack running is not part of the game. Indeed it is its spoiler.

1) Folded starting field

If TV production really needs a 2 min. start interval, I would stick with the WRE-ranking to define start order but would fold  the starting field in half.

So instead of:
10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
There will be
5 6 7 4 8 3 9 2 10 1

That way the weakest runner work as buffers between the strongest and the runners going for the medals have a reasonable 4 min start interval...

2) Bonus Sprint

Then I would skip all sorts of butterflies but introduce a simple situate separator method called "bonus sprint".

This bonus sprint just separates the pack leader from the pack. The pack riders are sent to a minor running loop (without map) to give the pack leader a reasonable head-start. Meanwhile the pack riders get the estimated time the running loop takes withdrawn from their running time. (So: if they run to slow, they loose time. If fast the win some seconds; method described here)
So easy, Göran Andersson.  Wasn't it?

"Bonus-Sprint" a minimum impact high efficient separation method

I used my swedish clubs championships last weekend for a test of my new favorite separation method. The method belongs to the so long ignored group of "situate methods" and is related to Jarkko Ryyppös Dead Running.

Method
At a control point runners catched up by runners started later have to leave their map at the control and run to an another control  along a marked route (not on the map), approximately 10s jogging away from the first control before returning and continuing the race. For running this extra loop, the will get 20s substracted from their total running time. 

Benefits
- As a situative method it separates all pack-leaders from their pack.
- It makes the top of the result list fairer. The misfit for catched up runners is minimal (having to run 80m more than leaders and solo runners, and losing/wining minimal time thereby) alike a catched up competitor at a cycling time trial.
- It is a minimal measure in regard to the course setting.

Misfits
- We get finally rid of all kind of  lepidotera :-P
- It does not separate the rest of the pack

Details
The measure can be implemented to run automatically, basing on the splits at the control just before the "Bonus-Sprint"-control. For example all runners punchning between 10s ahead and 15s behind the designated pack-leader (started last) will be sent to the Bonus-Sprint. The time the Bonus-Sprint shall take should belong to the visibility out of the control. The time gap produced with the method should be so big, that the pack permanently looses contact to the designated pack leader.

The measure should be applied after 50% and 75% of the course.

To make it short: The test failed due to the lack of packs. To big the differences in the competitors performances and additionally a course with real long distance qualities...  To really test the measure it would need a more even starter field.* 

* In 2011 I tried to invite the Competition Commission of Swiss Orienteering to use the national series as a test field for new separation measures, but I did not insist enough.

Simulation 'Situative Trennmethode' an der WM 2011 Langdistanz Herren

Ich spiele einmal durch, wie die WM 2011 Langdistanz Herren mit einer situativen Trennmethode ausgesehen hätte. Was sind die zu erwartenden Effekte?

Beschreibung

  • Grundidee einer situativen Trennmethode ist, dass man trennt, was sich im Rennverlauf effektiv an Gruppen gebildet hat. Dabei wird der oder die schwächeren Läufer durch eine Zusatzaufgabe dauerhaft hinter den bis dahin stärkeren Läufer versetzt. Es soll ein möglichst einfacher Algorithmus zur Aufteilung verwendet werden.
  • Als eigentliche Trennmethode, eignen sich v.a. Methoden mit einem grösseren Zeitraum bis zur Auflösung (z.B. Asymetrische Snake oder Dead Running). Idealerweise befinden sich die Trennung nach der Hälfte, die Auflösung nach 75% des Rennens (-> Keine Gruppe hält länger als ein Drittel des Rennens, Siehe Packfigures Spalte D).

Gruppenschwächere Richtung b. Für die Prüfung verwende ich diesselbe Gruppendefinition, wie für Packfigures: Läufer, die weniger als 15 Sekunden auseinander laufen sind eine Gruppe. Der Gruppenstärkste ist der letztgestartete der Gruppe.

Methode
  • Anhand der Gruppen bei Posten 17 (nach packfigures) lege ich fest, welche Läufer direkt Richtung a weiterlaufen und welche zuerst die Schlaufe Richtung b absolvieren.
  • Dann rechne ich aufgrund der effektiv gelaufenen Abschnittszeiten, eine 'Startliste', die beschreibt, wann alle Läufer schliesslich in Richtung a weglaufen würden.
  • Ich vergleiche beiden 'Startlisten Richtung a' starre Methode (a/b alternierend nach Startliste) und situative Methode

Resultate
  • Gemäss der Gruppendefinition haben sich bis zum Posten 17 elf Gruppen gebildet (27 Gruppenläufer).
  • Mit der starren Methode existieren sechs davon nach der Trennmethode ganz oder teilweise weiter. Zusätzlich haben sich zwei weitere Gruppen gebildet (17 Gruppenläufer).
  • Bei der situativen Trennmethode bleibt nur eine Gruppe teilweise zusammen und es haben sich drei neue Gruppen gebildet (9 Gruppenläufer). Eine dieser neuen Gruppen entsteht zwischen dem Testposten und der eigentlichen Trennmethode (Rollier-Lang). Drei der Gruppen sind unausgeglichen mit effektiven Laufzeitdifferenzen von 26-36 Minuten. Die vierte Gruppe ist ausgeglichen: Tsvetkov - Novikov - Mamleev, die im Schlussklassement die Plätze 12, 14 und 16 belegen.

Betrachtung
Die situative Trennung von Gruppen ist rein logisch wirkungsvoller bei der Trennung von bestehenden Gruppen. Insbesondere starke Läufer werden gezielt isoliert. Neugebildete Gruppen sind in der Regel heterogen. Bei grösseren Gruppen werden die schwächeren Läufer nicht getrennt (Tsvetkov-Mamleev). Ein Restrisiko besteht, dass der schwächere Läufer nach der Trennmethode nahtlos in einer neuen Gruppe mit einem a-Läufer unterkommt. Dabei wird das Feld entsprechend der Tagesleistung sanft neu geordnet (z.B. Lauenstein hinter Ikonen, statt wie beider starren Methode vor ihm). Längere Kooperationen von Diplomläufern sind mit der situativen Methode nicht zu erwarten.*
Die starre Methode dagegen trennt schlicht nur die Hälfte des Feldes.

* Anmerkung: Ein Teil der Erfolgsquote der situativen Methode, liegt darin, dass in der Simulation sog. b-Läufer-Gruppen zum Teil mit ihren unabhängig gelaufenen Zeiten auf die gemeinsame Schlaufe geschickt wurden. Hier sind aber Agglomerationseffekte zu erwarten.
