Swiss Orienteering Team history 1999-2019

I updated the Swiss Orienteering Team history. Now it is 1999-2019. It is published here

fig.1. Simona Aebersold takes big steps nowadays.(src. swiss-orienteering.ch)
Next year we will miss long time A-team runners and mutiple WOC medal winners Judith Wyder and Fabian Hertner after 10. resp.13 seasons in the Senior Elite Team.

Otherwise only one big change: Simona Aebersold takes the big step into the A-Team from the Junior Team directly. Such did not happen the last 20 years.

Promotions: Katrin Müller and Deborah Stadler (Anschlussgruppe->B-Team); Timo Suter (from Junior Team -> B-Team);Marcia Mürner, Sakia Bruchmüller, Silvan Ullman, Andrin Gründler and Andrin Bieri (from Junior Team-> Anschlussgruppe); Eline Gemperle, Lea Widmer, Siana Senn, Hanna Wey, Jonas Soldini, David Zürcher, Manuele Ren, Pascal Schmid (all new Junior-Team members)

Relegations: Thomas Curiger (from U23->B-Team); Sven Hellmüller (from B-Team->Anschlussgruppe).

Drop-outs: Andrea Roggo and Térence Risse from Anschlussgruppe, Hanna Müller from B-Team. Andreas Rüdlinger, Sven Aschwanden, Alain Denzler and Raffael Huber were all part of the temporary EOC contenders Team dissolved after EOC 2018.

This years aspect of the Swiss Team history is the number of actual members over the years. No big changes here actually, aside with the reintroduction of the Anschlussgruppe, the number rised the last two years.

fig.2. Numbers of members of the Swiss National Team 1999-2019

And a second aspect. Which part of the Team remains, while how many drop out or get promoted to the Team.
fig.3. Dynamics inside the Swiss Team.
With medians of 40 remaining, 9 dropping out and 10 getting promoted, we can roughly say that 20% of the Team gets replaced per year.

Langweiliger Massenstart. Weltcup Liberec 2012

Abb.1. Die Position von Fabian Hertner kurz vor Posten 14. In der Lücke zwischen Dlabaja und Omdal laufen Rost, Letho, Hertner, Prochazka und Lysell ohne GPS.

I could climb during the race several positions and so i finished as 14th. Not only due to the my technical skills, much more because i always had someone in front of me. That made it easier to close the gaps, actually a quite boring race. And in some years we should run this kind of races at world champs, not very motivating...
Fabian Hertner über den Jagdstart am Weltcup in Liberec 2012

The method is an attempt to fig leafing the fact, that massstart and chasestart with a huge starterfield of top runners are boring formats with a low level of independant navigation as soon as bigger leading groups form (which is highliy likely; See even Hubmann and Gueorgiou catched at WC Liberec). In that perspective it is less a separating method but an argument against mass-&chasestart at the WOC. :-)

Testlauf I Elite: Fabian Hertner vs. Martin Hubmann

Ein Vergleich der Routen von Fabian Hertner (1.) und Martin Hubmann (6.) am ersten Testlauf 2011 auf der Karte Schallenberg.

Abb.1.

I started pretty save and could stay concentrated all the race. I had only some small problems into control #6 and #7, and towards #18 i was climbing a little bit to much.
Fabian Hertner

Fabian Hertners Vorbereitung WOC 2010 Sprint Final

Abb.1. Fabian Hertners selbstgezeichnete Karte und seine Prognose (magenta), sowie die effektive Bahn (blau).

For the Sprint Final this was not possible due to there was no old map. So what to do in this situation? I made my own map... In the Internet there are several good maps with aereal photos, 3D maps and street views which are up to date. This made it quite easy to draw a map in OCAD. Some map clips in the bulletin 2 gave me an idea of how detailed the map will be. Then it was pretty easy to guess where the course will go while having 100m climbing and probably the start in the finish area. Here you can see my map with the WOC course (blue) and my course guess (purple).
